Cape Verde v Saudi Arabia – Saturday, 1am
View all available markets at William Hill
- Cape Verde have defied expectations at every turn, holding both Spain and Uruguay to draws despite being underdogs in each match. Now they stand on the brink of history: a result here would see them become just the third African nation to reach the World Cup knockout stages on their debut without suffering a defeat.
- The Blue Sharks have captured the hearts of neutrals with their resilience and organisation, and even a draw could be enough for Bubista’s side to progress. Confidence should be high too — Cape Verde have lost just one of their last seventeen matches inside 90 minutes, an extraordinary run for a nation making its first appearance on the world stage.
- There are several qualification scenarios in play, but Bubista will simply want his side to take matters into their own hands. William Hill make Cape Verde 6/4 to claim the victory that would almost certainly send them through.
- Remarkably, Saudi Arabia also still have a chance of reaching the knockout stages despite their heavy 4-0 defeat to Spain last time out. The Green Falcons sit bottom of Group H with just one point, but victory here would keep their qualification hopes alive.
- Progressing would be a landmark achievement — Saudi Arabia have made it out of the World Cup group stage only once before, all the way back in 1994. However, their recent form is a concern: they have managed just one win in their last eight matches, a run that will worry Georgios Donis heading into this decisive fixture.
- Defensively, the warning signs are even clearer. Saudi Arabia have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last eighteen World Cup games, a streak that stretches back decades. Even so, William Hill make them 17/10 to claim the win they desperately need.
Bet Builder Hub:
- Result – Cape Verde – It’s a tough game to call this but given their unbeaten run at the moment, i’m backing Cape Verde to edge it.
- Total Goals – Over 3.5 – François Letexier is the man in the middle, he’s produced at least four cards in his last three games, including his only game at this World Cup so far.
- Total Corners – Over 8.5 – Seven of Cape Verde’s last nine competitive games have produced nine or more corners.
