- Japan’s 4-0 victory over Tunisia in their last outing looks to have all but secured their place in the World Cup knockout stages for the third consecutive tournament. The Samurai Blue are now nine games unbeaten in all competitions (W7, D2) and head into Thursday’s clash full of confidence.
- A draw would be enough to confirm Japan’s spot in the round of 32, though they also have the opportunity to top the group if they can better the Netherlands’ result on Friday. They could even make a slice of history: Japan are aiming to become just the second AFC nation to go five World Cup games unbeaten, a feat last achieved by South Korea between 1998 and 2002.
- Japan’s recent record against European opposition is another positive, with the Samurai Blue unbeaten in their last four World Cup meetings with UEFA nations. Defensively, they have been outstanding too, keeping six clean sheets in their last seven matches. William Hill make Japan 17/20 favourites to claim another victory.
- Sweden looked the real deal when they opened their campaign with a 5-1 win over Tunisia, but that optimism evaporated quickly as they suffered a 5-1 defeat of their own against the Netherlands last time out. Even so, Graham Potter’s side still have a strong chance of qualifying.
- Neutrals tuning in late should be in for a treat. Sweden’s last six matches have all produced over three goals, while their supporters can take encouragement from the head‑to‑head record — the Swedes are unbeaten in their last four meetings with Japan, although the most recent came back in 2002.
- As mentioned above, goals feel inevitable here. Sweden have seen both teams score in each of their last eight matches, adding further weight to the expectation of an open contest. Goals should be the focus for punters, but those who fancy Sweden to take all three points can back them at 14/5 with William Hill.
Bet Builder Hub:
