What is the DP World Tour Championship?

The DP World Tour Championship is the final event of the year on the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour). The 50 highest players on the DP World Tour at the start of the tournament compete for a share of the $10 million purse.

Understanding DP World Tour Championship Format

History of the tournament

The DP World Tour was designed as the finale for the DP World Tour and was first held in 2009 to replace the Volvo Masters.

Format of the tournament

The tournament is contested by the leading 50 players in the DP Tour rankings at the start of the tournament. To rank highly in the DP Tour rankings players usually have to have performed well throughout the season at many of the Tour’s 45 events during the year.

Prize money

In the first few years of the tournament the prize fund was $7.5 million, before being increased to $8 million in 2012 and then $9 million in 2021. From 2022 the prize fund has been $10 million, with the winner taking home $3 million of that total.

Qualifying criteria

In order to qualify for the DP World Tour Championship players must be ranked in the top 50 on the Tour and do this by winning or playing well at other DP World Tour events over the course of the year to amass ranking points.

Key Contenders and Players to Watch: DP World Tour Championship 2023

  1. Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy is top ranked on the DP World Tour this season, despite only playing nine events, due to wins at the Scottish Open and T10 finishes in the Open Championship, U.S. Open and BMW PGA Championship. In the process, McIlroy has amassed 5164 points on the Tour this season, over 2000 more than the second ranked player, Jon Rahm. The Northern Irishman has also won this event twice in the past, in 2012 and 2015, and he must be considered a key contender once again.

  1. Jon Rahm

No player has won the DP World Tour Championship more than Jon Rahm, who has three successes to his name, coming in 2017, 2019, 2022. Having only played six Tour events this year, Rahm still ranks second with 3000 points, after victory in the Masters at Augusta and T10 finishes in the Open Championship, U.S. Open and BMW PGA Championship. Rahm clearly loves the Earth Course in Dubai and will be a strong contender once again.

  1. Ryan Fox

New Zealander Ryan Fox has had once of the best years of his career on the DP World Tour. He has hit red-hot form towards the end of the season, finishing T3 in the Irish Open and then winning the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in September, before finishing T2 in the recent Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews. With over 2700 ranking points this season from 16 tournaments, he’s shown he can lay up with the best.

  1. Adrian Meronk

Adrain Meronk shock at being left out of the recent European Ryder Cup team was well documented, and on the form he has showed this year on the DP World Tour he had every reason to feel aggrieved. The 30-year-old won the Italian Open and has recorded three top 10 finishes from 21 tournaments this year, amassing over 2000 in the process. Meronk finished T7 in this tournament last year and another bold bid is expected.

  1. Min Woo Lee

Australian Min Woo Lee is another who has had a fine year on the DP World Tour, amassing over 2000 ranking points from 14 tournaments this season. Highlights from this year include a T2 finish in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, and a T5 finish in the U.S. Open. He comes here in form after finish T7 in the Irish Open and T14 in the BMW PGA Championship last month.

DP World Tour Championship 2023: Course Analysis and Strategy

Dubai’s Jumeriah Golf Estates Earth Course is a Greg Norman design that first opened in 2009, when the first DP World Tour Championship was held there.

The Earth Course plays long at 7706 yards, with two of the four par 5s over 600 yards. There are a further two par 5, four par 3s and 10 par 4s in total.

One of the features of the Earth Course is the abundance of bunkers, some of which are expansive and deep traps that will take strokes from players that aren’t accurate over the course of their round.

The 17th, which includes a 160-yard carry over water to an island green, is an iconic hole.

Betting Markets and Odds

Most golf bets are placed on the outright winner of a tournament, either as a single win bet or as an each-way bet, where you will get a return if your player finishes in the first six, or 10 players depending on the market you select. Other popular golf markets are betting on who the leader after the first round will be, and the winning margin at the end of the tournament.

Outright winner bets

Bets on the outright winner of the tournament only make a return should the player selected come out on top. With golf tournaments often including hundreds of players, selecting just one to win can be a risky proposition.

Top Finisher and Each-Way Bets

Each-way betting on golf tournaments is very popular as it usually gives bettors the chance to secure a return if a player finishes in the top six. With odds usually high, correctly predicting a player that will place can still generate a good return.

There is also often betting on who will finish in the top 10 or top 20, if you are looking for extra insurance.
