Charlie Hills’ William Hill blog: Lincoln has been the plan all winter for Wanees

William Hill ambassador Charlie Hills looks ahead to the start of the Flat season on Saturday, where he has a fancied runner in the Lincoln, as well as running through the horses to watch out for from his stable this season.

Doncaster, Saturday

The Lincoln (3.35pm) looks an obvious race for Wanees and we’re really looking forward to running him. He’s proven over a mile and loves soft ground, so it looks an ideal starting point for the season.

We’ve had the race in mind throughout the winter and it’s always really been the plan. He worked really nicely last week and I’ve been very happy with everything he has done at home.

He won in a hood first time out last year at Sandown and I’ve decided to put one on him again just to keep him concentrating. The pace of the race should really suit him and I actually think the soft ground is just what he wants. They are saying the ground is going to be pretty rough and that should be right in his comfort zone.

Horses to follow this season

We’ve decided to train Rabaah for some of those Commonwealth Cup trials in the next month or so – the Pavilion Stakes at Ascot or Sandy Lane at Haydock look the most likely races he’ll end up in. He’s moving really nicely and his work at home has been great.

I’ve always liked him and thought he was one of our better two-year-olds this time last year. I gave him a couple of runs during the winter to get a bit of experience under his belt and now is the right time to step him up in grade.

Galeron is in great form and we’re looking at the Listed Burradon Stakes at Newcastle as his first port of call. He’s in the Guineas and we’ll see how he goes at Newcastle and then make a plan from there. He’s certainly one to look forward to this season – he’s got plenty of scope to improve from two to three.

Pogo has come back from Dubai and seems fresh and well in himself. I’d imagine we’ll look to chart a similar path with him this season starting with the John Of Gaunt at Haydock.

The other one to keep an eye on this season is Cicero’s Gift. He won really well at Newbury on his debut last season and he’s in the 2000 Guineas. He runs at Wolverhampton (7.00pm) on Thursday and that will tell us where we are with him. He’s a lovely horse and one I’m excited about.
