Key Sporting Events in December

| BY News Team

As we roll into the final month of 2023, the year’s sporting action continues to come thick and fast throughout the festive period.

We take a look below at the key sporting events to look out for in December.

PDC World Darts Championship: 15th December – 3rd January

It wouldn’t be December without the thundering sound of a dart landing in treble 20 and the roar from Alexandra Palace echoing from our television sets.

The PDC World Championship in December is the pinnacle of professional darts, drawing global attention for its fierce competition and election atmosphere. Held at London’s Alexandra Palace, the event’s prestige is heightened by the presence of iconic players, including legendary figures like Phil Taylor and current stars such as Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price and current favourite Luke Humphries.

Boxing Day Football: 26th December

One of the most iconic festive traditions in the United Kingdom is Boxing Day football, where most of the 92 EFL clubs across the country gear up for domestic league matches on 26th December.

This year, the early kick off in the Premier League sees Eddie Howe’s Newcastle host Nottingham Forest, with Burnley hosting Liverpool at 17:30 and a proper boxing day treat between Manchester United and Aston Villa in the 20:00 kick off.

For those who can’t wait that long, the Premier League continues in its normal schedule – but with an added festive twist this year. For the first time this century, Wolves and Chelsea will contest a Christmas Eve fixture at Molineux Stadium at 1pm, so there’s plenty of football action to get your teeth stuck into around the big day.

Kempton Christmas Festival: 26th – 27th December

Another Boxing Day tradition in the UK sporting calendar is the Kempton Christmas Festival. Renowned for its festive atmosphere and high-stakes competition, the festival spans two days and features a lineup of prestigious races.

Among the marquee events is the King George VI Chase, a Grade 1 steeplechase that attracts the top thoroughbreds around the country. The race’s history is adorned with legendary winners, including the likes of Kauto Star and Desert Orchid, whilst current stars such as Shishkin and Bravemansgame could well be on show this year. There is no doubt that it is one of the most coveted prizes in National Hunt racing.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards: 19th December

Whilst not strictly a sporting fixture or match, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards is undoubtedly one of the biggest events on the sporting calendar, where one British sportsperson will be awarded for their excellence in sporting achievement via public vote.

This year, England goalkeeper Mary Earps is the firm 4/11 favourite to win the award, creating the prospect of two Lionesses winning it in consecutive years after Beth Mead scooped the 2022 accolade. Recently retired England bowler Stuart Broad is the second favourite at 3/1, with legendary jockey Frankie Dettori a 12/1 shot.
