| BY News Team

William Hill News take a look at the upcoming British Grand Prix and have put together a guide to tell you everything you need to know ahead of the race.

The countdown is on for one of the biggest weekends in world motorsport as the British Grand Prix returns on July 5.  As one of the crown jewels in Britain’s sporting calendar, The British Grand Prix is more than a race; it is the spiritual home of Formula 1.

Hosted at the iconic Silverstone Circuit in the heart of Northamptonshire, the event dates back to 1950, when it became the very first race in the Formula One World Championship. More than seven decades later, the grandstands still roar and the spectacle has never been bigger.

When Is It?

Track action runs from Thursday 2 July to Sunday 5 July 2026, with lights out for the big race on the Sunday afternoon.

This year’s rendition carries extra intrigue thanks to the strong British presence on the grid. Fans will be cheering for hometown heroes Lando Norris, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Oliver Bearman, and Arvid Lindblad.

British support has always played a major role at Silverstone, but with so many home grown drivers down on the tarmac, the atmosphere in 026 is expected to reach another level.

The Venue

Silverstone Circuit is regarded as one of the greatest tracks in motorsport. Originally built on a former Royal Air Force airfield, the venue has evolved into a high-speed masterpiece that tests both driver bravery and engineering excellence.

The current circuit measures 5.89 kilometres and features 18 corners, including iconic sections such as Maggotts, Becketts, and Copse Corner. Drivers spend around 80% of the lap at full throttle, making Silverstone one of the fastest and most physically demanding races of the season.

Precision is crucial around the Northamptonshire venue. The smallest mistake can cost valuable time, while changing weather conditions often add another unpredictable layer to proceedings. Rain has played a decisive role in many classic British Grands Prix over the years, and teams will once again need to be prepared for every possibility.

The circuit also remains hugely popular with supporters. More than 500,000 fans attended across the race weekend last year, underlining Silverstone’s status as one of the best-attended events on the Formula 1 calendar.

Previous Winners

No driver has enjoyed more success at Silverstone than Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion holds the all-time record with nine British Grand Prix victories, cementing his place as the undisputed king of Silverstone.

Hamilton’s emotional victory in 2024 was one of Formula 1’s standout moments in recent memory, ending a winless streak of more than two seasons in front of an adoring home crowd.

The following year, Lando Norris finally secured his first British Grand Prix triumph, delivering a memorable home victory that sparked incredible celebrations among the packed grandstands.

Interestingly, British drivers have dominated recent editions of the race, with four of the last six winners hailing from the United Kingdom, a statistic that will give home fans hope heading into 2026:

  • 2025: Lando Norris
  • 2024: Lewis Hamilton
  • 2023: Max Verstappen
  • 2022: Carlos Sainz
  • 2021: Lewis Hamilton
  • 2020: Lewis Hamilton

What To Expect In 2026

The 2026 British Grand Prix promises another blockbuster weekend of racing. With fierce championship battles, a passionate home crowd, and several British drivers capable of challenging for victory, all the ingredients are in place for another unforgettable chapter in Silverstone history.
