Next Premier League Manager To Leave Odds And Predictions

Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is the favourite in Premier League odds to be the next manager to leave his post. Hired in November, van Nistelrooy has taken seven points from 15 matches in charge of the Foxes, conceding 38 goals in the process.

Destined for relegation, Leicester’s decision to hire van Nistelrooy has backfired spectacularly. They are on a five-match losing streak, scoring only one goal in that period. Heavy defeats have been common since van Nistelrooy was hired, including 4-0 losses to Everton and Brentford since the start of February.

Eighteen of the 20 teams have 11 matches to play this season (Liverpool and Aston Villa have 10). For most sides, there’s not much point sacking a manager at this stage of the season. As a result, the betting markets predict no manager will be sacked if van Nistelrooy retains his position until the end of the campaign.

Teams already destined to be relegated are candidates to make a late change as they plan for the future. Mid-table sides with little to no chance of reaching the top six can take this approach, too. These clubs have nothing to play for and can benefit from learning more about their team to prepare for the 2025/26 season.

Will Leicester Look Elsewhere?

Leicester were 16th with 10 points from 12 matches when van Nistelrooy was hired. Sacking Steve Cooper after a solid – if unspectacular – start was an eyebrow-raising decision, particularly for a relatively inexperienced van Nistelrooy.

Five points from safety and with a -0.97 expected goal difference per 90 minutes this season, Leicester’s chances of avoiding the drop are minimal. William Hill’s latest odds give the Foxes a 96.2% implied probability of suffering relegation.

A desperate managerial switch is certainly possible. Leicester to win isn’t getting included in anyone’s weekend bet builder picks at the moment, so maybe a new-manager bounce can give the club a glimmer of hope.

If they thought van Nistelrooy was the right man in November, though, it might be best for the club to stick to their guns. It hasn’t worked so far, but the Dutchman won 64.7% of his matches in charge of PSV Eindhoven and could make them into a real force in the Championship next season.

Time For Change At St. Mary’s?

Like Leicester, Southampton swapped managers midseason, bringing in Ivan Jurić to replace Russell Martin. Southampton have one win and eight goals scored in 11 matches under their new manager, while conceding 29.

They were doomed when Jurić was hired, though, so this surely wasn’t an appointment just for this season. With only five points on the board with a few days to Christmas, Southampton didn’t have a realistic chance of survival, regardless of their manager.

Maybe Jurić isn’t the man to bring them back up next season. There’s not much for Southampton to gain by changing managers before the end of the campaign, however, so we expect them to stick with Jurić until May at least.

Ange Under Threat

Ange Postecoglou is the only other Premier League manager at meaningful risk of being the next to lose his job. Postecoglou has been a short price to be the next manager fired for the majority of the season, but it doesn’t seem like Daniel Levy is close to pulling the trigger, even with Spurs languishing in 13th.

European qualification isn’t happening. Spurs aren’t going to go down. Matches with Bournemouth, Fulham, and Chelsea, intertwined with a Europa League matchup with AZ Alkmaar, present a tricky run for Postecoglou, which could see more questions asked about his future.

If the Australian has survived this long with major underachievement, it’s hard to see Levy making a knee-jerk decision before the end of the campaign.
