Young at heart of Speaker's race
Sir George Young is the clear punters' choice to become the next permanent Speaker after William Hill slashed his odds from an opening 25/1 to 5/2 clear favourite.
"All of the big money bets so far have been for Sir George, and his odds have collapsed like the Speaker's resistance to stepping down," said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
"However, now that Speaker Martin has definitely gone it is very likely that other serious candidates will emerge."
Frank Field has been the other contender to attract singificant support and he is now 6/1 joint second favourite along with Alan Haselhurst with Hills who also offer 9/1 Menzies Campbell and John Bercow; 10/1 Patrick Cormack and Richard Shepherd; 12/1 Alan Beith and Richard Taylor; 14/1 Vince Cable and Michael Lord; 16/1 Roger Gale and John Heppell; 20/1 Tony McAvoy and Ann Widdecombe.
