In a battle you need some Warriors
St Helens entertain their fierce rivals the Wigan Warriors in this crunch Super League game at Knowsley Road on Friday night.
Wigan are bang in form having won five matches in a row including beating Saints' title rivals the Leeds Rhinos 28-10 at the JJB Stadium. Having been 10-0 down it looked ominous for the Warriors before a remarkable 28 unanswered points were scored by the home side. That win took Brian Noble's side up to the lofty heights of fifth in the table and if they maintain this form they could be serious challengers come play-off time.
Saints meanwhile easily beat an out-of-form Harlequins side last week. However, the week before at Knowsley Road the Wakefield Wildcats caused a huge shock as they beat Mick Potter's men. Nevertheless Saints are still deserved favourites in the match betting at 4/11.
Wigan may make the short trip to Knowsley Road in high spirits but a price of 2/1 looks too short to consider backing as despite their recent good form the home side still have the better team and if they click there will probably be only one winner.
However, the main handicap line of eight points seems to be too big and with both teams at 10/11 and the draw at 14/1. Wigan with a eight-point start at 10/11 looks the bet.
For even more security, why not invest in one of William Hill's alternative handicaps, Wigan having a 12-point start looking the best at odds of 4/7.
Pat Richards has been Wigan's main man, not only has the Aussie been his ever-reliable self with the boot, but he has notched up 16 tries so far this season, which is the second most in the Super League and just one less than he scored in the whole of last season.
He is 12/1 to score the first try against Saints and evens to score one at anytime. For the hosts, last season's top Super League try scorer Ade Gardner could be the bet at 10/1 to cross the line first.
As always this match promises to be full of tension, skill and no doubt the odd mistake in front of a fantastic atmosphere at Knowsley Road. Saints will probably end Wigan's winning run but they should not be able to defy the handicap.
