European Athletics Championships Tips: 16th August
The final day of the 2026 European Athletics Championships is packed with fascinating events. William Hill News has done a deep dive to bring you its athletics betting tips.
Men’s Pole Vault
Can anyone beat Armand Duplantis? Probably not.
Duplantis is one of the biggest athletics stars on the planet and has a seismic advantage over the rest of the field.
Sondre Guttormsen and Emmanouil Karalis lead the chasing pack. Owen Heard will need to be at his very best to sneak into medal contention.
Women’s 1500 Metres
Georgia Hunter Bell is at 1/5 to win gold. Every runner in the second heat went quicker than Hunter Bell, but that doesn’t tell us too much when Hunter Bell and Frenchwoman Agathe Guillemot have shown they are considerably quicker than the rest of the field throughout this year.
The World Indoor champion earlier this year, Hunter Bell should add a first European title to her medal collection if she’s at her best. Guillemot is the only realistic if this race pushes the four-minute mark as expected.
Women’s Long Jump
The long jump promises to be a hard-fought event on Sunday. Malaika Mihambo won in London and topped qualifying, but Larissa Iapichino and Hilary Kpatcha are both going to be gunning for gold. Iapichino has the longest jump by any European this year.
Agate de Sousa’s season-best jump of seven metres shows she can compete to top spot, too.
Men’s 3000-Metre Steeplechase
A pair of Germans lead in the way in the men’s steeplechase with Karl Bebendorf and Frederik Ruppert atop the rankings. Neither shone in the qualifiers, but Ruppert is the only European to break the eight-minute mark this year.
Bebendorf joins his compatriot as the only competitors to have gone under 8 minutes and 10 seconds. An all-German podium is possible with Niklas Buccholz ranked sixth among all Europeans.
Men’s 4 x 400 Metres
Fresh off doing the double in the relays on Saturday, Great Britain are aiming for a clean sweep on Sunday. The host nation are heavily fancied in this event with a stacked team and it would be brave to bet against them here.
Portugal, France, and the Netherlands promise to be in contention. France are the biggest threat for gold, while the Netherlands have enjoyed success when the lights are brightest.
Women’s 4 x 400 Metres
It’s hard to look past the Netherlands, led by Femke Bol, given their rich history in this event. Other teams have star power, like Poland with Natalia Bukowiecka and Norway with Henriette Jæger, but none have the all-around strength of the Dutch.
It would take a spectacular team performance for the Brits to add to their medal tally here.
