King George Chase 2023: Everything you need to know

| BY News Team

This article will give you all the information you will need for this year’s King George Chase at Kempton.

We preview the race below.

What is the King George VI Chase

This event first took place in February of 1937, and it was named in honour of the new British monarch, King George VI. The race holds significant historical value as it was only run twice before the outbreak of World War II, during which Kempton Park was closed for racing and used as a prisoner-of-war camp. The first winner of the race was Southern Hero, who remains the oldest ever winner (12 y/o).

The new date of the fixture is 26th December, Boxing Day, and has been ever since it was reopened in 1947.  This race is now the second most prestigious chase in England, surpassed only by the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

How to Bet on the King George Chase 2023

Tip #1 – Study Horses + Jockeys

  • Have a look at the race card and see which horses are running and who the jockeys will be. It is worth looking at the combinations of trainers and jockeys and their past performances as it can be a good indication of chances of success.

Tip #2 – Analysing Form

  • Form (past performances) tends to be a good way to see whether a horse has been performing well (winning or placing) in recent races and could give a good indication of their chances in upcoming races. However, it is similarly valuable recognising if a horse has a recent history of continual poor finishes towards the back of the field, as this could signal an increased risk of a similar outcome next time out.

Tip #3 – Consider Track Conditions

  • Within the autumn and winter months, considering the track conditions (going) is an important point to consider before placing your bets. Horses within the same race tend to prefer different track conditions so it is essential to look at the going on the day and who that favours within the field.

Tip #4 – Pay Attention to Trainer and Owner Records

  • Similar to studying the form of the horses, the form of the trainers can also be important, giving potential insight into the overall health of their yard and could therefore be an indicator of success and a safe option when looking for a good bet.

Tip #5 – Manage your Bankroll Wisely

  • When betting, it is important to do so safely. Before placing any bets, it is worth determining how much money you can afford to risk along with your bet size and how this will adjust following your results.
