Peter Marsh Chase Tips 2025: Runner-By-Runner Guide

Peter Marsh Chase

The Peter Marsh Chase was a Grade 2 National Hunt race run over 3 miles 1 1/2 furlongs featuring 19 fences, but it has now been reclassified as a premier handicap and it is open to horses aged five years and over.

The race was first run in 1981 and in recent times the top-level staying chasers to have won it have included Bristol De Mai (2017), Vintage Clouds (2020) and 2021’s hugely impressive Royal Pagaille who takes his place once again.

Here is your runner-by-runner guide to this year’s renewal with our live betting HERE:

Royale Pagaille (Venetia Williams)

A proven performer on heavy ground, Royale Pagaille has a good record after a break, and on Saturday it will be 56 days since his Betfair Chase victory here.

Unlike some, Venetia Williams wasn’t tempted in the slightest to run her eleven-year-old in the King George VI Chase after such a testing race, and the 166-rated chaser will be feeling the full benefits of his well-earned break.

Trelawne (Kim Bailey & Mat Nicholls)

After prevailing in a thrilling tussle with Iroko in the Graduation Chase here on November 23rd, Trelawne headed to Ascot a month later for the Howden Silver Cup, but could only manage a fourth place position, some 9¾ lengths behind the winner over the three mile trip.

This will be another tough ask for the horse carrying second top-weight in the handicap.

Iwilldoit (Sam Thomas)

Despite some big gaps in his career, the former Welsh Grand National winner Iwilldoit always tends to run a solid race in these long distance handicaps.

The twelve-year-old was just as good as ever in the latest renewal of the Welsh marathon, and he should be on the premises once more in this Haydock contest.

Imagine (Harry Derham)

Bought out of Gordon Elliott’s yard for €320,000 last February, Imagine was a well fancied flop in the Paddy Power Gold Cup where he was pulled up.

Derham blames the quick ground that day so maybe the funerial heavy at Haydock should perhaps do the trick?

Chambard (Venetia Williams)

The teenager hasn’t looked the same horse since winning the 2023 Becher Chase at Aintree and it will require a leap of faith to back this one given his current form. His current horse racing odds reflect his chance.

Richmond Lake (Donald McCain)

McCain’s nine-year-old has never scored over three miles, never mind over 3m1½f, and one begins to wonder where he would find the stamina for today’s task in hand.

Mr Vango (Sara Bradstock)

Exciting prospect Mr Vango notched the third victory of his career in Sandown’s London National early last month and has since bypassed the Welsh National and the Classic Chase in order to be fully fit again.

Heavy conditions will suit this nine-year-old down to a tee and he looks the chief danger to Royale Pagaille.

Bill Baxter (Warren  Greatrex)

Won the Topham Chase in 2023 with a prominent front rank display, but has struggled reach that level of form since. A couple of runs over hurdles this season however, may well have reignited his enthusiasm.

Peter Marsh Chase Prediction:

  1. Royale Pagaille
  2. Mr Vango
  3. Iwilldoit
