Austrian Grand Prix Preview: Verstappen to get back to winning ways

| BY News Team

After a thrilling British Grand Prix the drivers travel to Spielberg for the Austrian Grand Prix where Max Verstappen will be looking to get back on the podium as Mercedes keep improving and Ferrari continue their pursuit of Red Bull.

With the second in a run of seven consecutive European Grand Prix getting underway on Sunday we preview the action below.

The Leaders

Ferrari and Red Bull continue to dominate this season as the two teams top the Constructors Championship and their drivers make up the top four in the Drivers’ Championship. Mercedes have been underwhelming this season, but recent improvements see them sit third in the constructors with their drivers, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, fifth and sixth in the championship.

Despite a disappointing seventh place finish at Silverstone the reigning world champion Max Verstappen is still the favourite to win in Austria on Sunday at 5/6. The Dutchman still sits top of the drivers’ standings by 34 points from his teammate Sergio Perez in second. A win on Sunday would see him move at least 40 points clear as we head towards the halfway point of the season.

Sergio Perez makes up the other half of the dominant Red Bull team and he made sure his team took home a good share of the points with a second-place finish last weekend. At 10/1 he is fourth favourite to take the win in Austria.

After some dispute Carlos Sainz took the position from his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc to give him his first win in Formula One on his 150th start last weekend. That performance sees him head into this weekend as the third favourite to top the podium at 9/1.

Having played second fiddle to Verstappen for most of the season Charles Leclerc is once again second favourite at 11/4 to win Sunday’s race. He will be hoping to make the podium after missing out at Silverstone, and is odds-on to do so at 4/9.

Lewis Hamilton put in a stellar drive in the ever-improving Mercedes to achieve a third-place finish at his home circuit last Sunday. He heads in to this weekend as fifth favourite to take the win at 11/1 but Hamilton would likely be satisfied if he can just make consecutive podiums and the seven-time world champion is 2/1 to do so.

The rest of the field

Alpine’s Fernando Alonso impressed at Silverstone, coming fifth last weekend. The two-time world champion is one of the most experienced drivers on the grid but with the dominance of richer teams, the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari, a win looks very unlikely at 175/1 but if he can drive as well as he did last weekend he looks to have a chance of a top six finish at 11/8.

George Russell was unlucky to crash out on the first corner at his home circuit and he will be keen to gain some points for Mercedes in Austria which doesn’t seem unlikely with the Brit 1/3 to finish in the top six and a shoe-in at 1/5 to finish in the points, while he is 11/4 to achieve his fourth podium finish of the season.

Haas driver Mick Schumacher picked up his first points of the season at Silverstone, almost managing to finish above world champion Max Verstappen. The man with one of the most famous names on the grid will be hoping for a repeat of last weekend’s performance and is 5/2 to finish in the points this weekend.
