Peru vs Denmark preview: Eriksen tipped to notch against Guerrero’s Incas

Peru vs Denmark today marks the first occasion in history that these two nations face each other.

Peru will be boosted by the return of prolific captain and talisman Paolo Guerrero, who was cleared to play at the 2018 World Cup having previously been set to miss the tournament.

Last month, a Swiss tribunal ruled on a drug ban temporarily lifting it to enable Peru’s record goal-scorer to play in the finals. Remarkably, the three captains of the other teams in his group (France, Australia, Denmark) all wrote in support of lifting the ban to FIFA.

Both sides have set national records heading into this tournament by going 15 matches unbeaten.

Peru legend Teófilo Cubillas has scored 10 and assisted two of Peru’s total 19 goals at the World Cup meaning Paolo Guerrero will have his work cut out if he is to record his name in the history books.

Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen will be Denmark’s inspiration at the World Cup having scored 16 goals in his last 18 games for Denmark including being involved in 56% of his team’s qualifying goals. In contrast, Peru kept only two clean sheets in 18 qualifiers.

The Dane’s have made it to the knockout stages in three out of four of the last World Cups, their best ever performance reaching the quarter finals in 1998.

If there are any omens for France (or maybe even Denmark), it is that Peru have faced the eventual World Cup winner in each of their four previous World Cup appearances (Uruguay in 1930, Brazil in 1970, Argentina in 1978, Italy in 1982).
