£1 billion mega-gamble as England head for World Cup glory
England have been slashed from 8/1 to 13/2 third favourites by William Hill to win the World Cup after a flood of support following their thrashing of Croatia.
They have also been cut from 5/2 to 7/4 win both of their remaining World Cup qualifying matches with Hills.
"The betting shops have been packed with patriotic punters convinced that England are at last genuine World Cup contenders; the phones have been red hot and gamblers from all over the world - many of them ex-pats, have been backing England online," said William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe.
"With England making it to the Finals with two games to spare we're already predicting that a record BILLION pounds-plus will be gambled on the tournament - and fearing a mega millions payout if England go all the way and win the tournament. Mind you, we'll have had 44 years to save up the money we'll have to pay out!"
Hills have opened a book on how far England will get in the World Cup and offer 9/2 that they go out in the Final's Group Stage; 11/4 they lose in the Round of 16; 3/1 in the Quarter Finals; 7/2 beaten in semis; 13/2 they finish runners up.
Wayne Rooney is 15/8 favourite to be England's top sorer in the World Cup Finals with William Hill who also offer 4/1 Defoe; 9/2 Lampard; 11/2 Owen; 6/1 Gerrard; 13/2 Heskey; 20/1 Beckham; 33/1 Terry.
