Bundesliga Opta Facts MD9

FC Augsburg v Hamburger SV

  • These teams have met only three times in all competitions before this fixture, with each club winning one game (one draw). Their last meeting was on the final matchday of 2011/12, when Augsburg beat Hamburg 1-0 at home.
  • On October 24 1986, Hamburg won 2-1 at Augsburg in the second round of the German Cup, en route to the title - HSV's last major title up to now. They won after losing keeper Uli Stein (red card) and had striker Heinz Gründel as a replacement goalkeeper because all substitutions had already been made.
  • Augsburg are unbeaten in the top flight against the four North German teams Hamburg, Bremen, Wolfsburg and Hannover (W4 D6).
  • Augsburg have won only two of their last seven BL home games (two draws, three losses) - one of them was against Hamburg (1-0 on MD 34 of last season).
  • Augsburg manager Markus Weinzierl is yet to use the same starting XI in consecutive games in his team's nine matches in all competitions this season.
  • At Nürnberg, Simon Jentzsch sat on the bench for the full 90 minutes of a BL game for the first time in more than eight and a half years (last time: March 27 2004, for his old club Wolfsburg in a 1-3 loss at Rostock).
  • Hamburg's Rene Adler has saved 40 shots this BL season, the most of all keepers. There is also no keeper that thwarted more big chances than the former international (eight, alongside Stuttgart's Sven Ulreich).
  • FCA captain Paul Verhaegh will miss the rest of 2012 due to injury. Without him, Augsburg have managed only one BL win (L4 D3), with that solitary victory coming 1-0 at Mainz in October 2011.
  • Augsburg's Sebastian Langkamp played for Hamburg in the first half of the 2007/08 season, but he only appeared for their reserve team (eight games in the third league, one goal).
  • Hamburg manager Thorsten Fink has faced Augsburg eight times as a player (incl. with Bayern Munich's reserves squad) and has won none of those games (L5 D3).

FC Schalke 04 v 1. FC Nürnberg

  • Both teams have met 50 times in the top flight, with Schalke holding a 23-14 edge in terms of wins (13 draws).
  • Nürnberg prevailed 4-1 at home in their last encounter, winning the second of the two teams' last four meetings - but that was also only their second win in the last 18 BL duels with Schalke (L11 D5).
  • Nürnberg's last victory at Schalke came more than 19 years ago. They won 2-1 back on September 18 1993.
  • The last time that Schalke gained 17 points from their first eight games was in 2000/01 (during Huub Stevens' first tenure as manager) - at the end of that season the team was famously crowned "Champions of the Hearts" (having lost the title to Bayern with Bayern's last shot of the season, when their own game had already ended).
  • Schalke have won 13 of their last 16 BL home games (L2 D1). This season, they won three of their four home games in the league, scoring three goals in each of those wins.
  • Schalke have lost only one of their last eleven league games (W7 D3) - 0-2 at home to Bayern on MD4.
  • Nürnberg have lost their last two away games, with an aggregate score of 1-7 - before that, the team had won four in a row away from home.
  • Overall, Nürnberg have been waiting for a league win for five games now, losing four of those.
  • Schalke have failed to score in only one of their last 19 BL games (0-2 at Bayern). They have scored at least twice in nine of their last 10 league games.
  • Five of Nürnberg's seven BL goals have come following set-piece-situations, only Freiburg (seven) and Bremen (six) have more, while their percentage of goals from set-piece-situations (71%) is by far the highest.
  • Schalke manager Huub Stevens has lost only two of his eleven BL encounters with Nürnberg (W7 D2). His counterpart Dieter Hecking has lost six of twelve meetings with Schalke (W3 D3).
  • Schalke‘s Christoph Moritz and Atsuto Uchida could both make their 50th BL appearance, while Jefferson Farfan celebrates his 28th birthday a day before the game.
  • Schalke‘s Kyriakos Papadopoulos is the league's best player with regards to personal duels on the pitch, winning 77% of them.

SC Freiburg v Borussia Dortmund

  • Dortmund have won their last four BL duels with Freiburg. However, they have never won five in a row against them.
  • The defending Champions Dortmund are already twelve points adrift of leaders Bayern, who have twice as many points as Borussia (24). No team in the Bundesliga has ever come back from such a sizeable deficit and won the title.
  • Freiburg are currently ranked seventh - their best ranking since MD 32 of 2010/11.
  • Under manager Christian Streich, Freiburg have lost only one of their twelve BL home games (W6 D5) - 1-2 v Bremen in late September.
  • Since their 5-2 win at Kaiserslautern in April, Dortmund have won none of their four BL away games (D3 L1) - only Augsburg have been waiting longer for a win on foreign soil (five games, Gladbach also four).
  • Only Bayern have faced fewer shots (53) than Dortmund (73) and Freiburg (76).
  • Dortmund have been unable to win their last five league games without Ilkay Gündogan in their starting eleven (L2 D3).
  • Robert Lewandowski has found the net in his last two BL games, and has had a hand in nine goals (five goals, four assists) in his last 10 appearances.
  • Both managers have the best point per game records in their respective team's BL histories (Streich 1.52 points per game, Jürgen Klopp 1.97).
  • In 2009, Christian Streich celebrated the German Cup title with Freiburg's under-19 team, beating Dortmund's junior players that were led by Mario Götze in the final, 6-5 on penalties.
  • Sebastian Kehl played for Freiburg in 2000/01 and in the first half of the 2001/02 season, making 40 BL appearances and scoring four goals.

FSV Mainz 05 v 1899 Hoffenheim

  • Of all current BL teams that Mainz have faced more than once, they have the best winning percentage against Hoffenheim (67%). Their BL points average versus Hoffenheim is 2.2 a game.
  • Hoffenheim were unbeaten last season against Mainz (W1 D1), after having lost all of the teams' first four BL meetings.
  • Mainz have lost none of their last three BL games (W2 D1) - the last time they managed this was between MD30-33 of last season (four games). Only Bayern have gained more points in that timespan (nine) than Mainz (seven, like Schalke and Stuttgart).
  • Despite taking the lead three times against Fürth last time out, Hoffenheim had to settle for a draw at full time. On average, a Hoffenheim goal has been worth only 0.6 points this season, the worst output of all teams in the top flight.
  • Mainz have kept a clean sheet in their last two BL home games, and have not conceded for 203 minutes at home. Another clean sheet would see them establish a new club record at home in the top flight.
  • Hoffenheim have lost four of their last five BL away games - their only win was a 3-0 at Stuttgart on MD5.
  • Hoffenheim have conceded 17 goals; the most in the league this season. Mainz, on the other hand, have the best defensive record at home (only one goal conceded in three home games).
  • On MD8, Mainz' starting eleven had an average age of 29 years and 269 days, the oldest in the club's BL history. Mainz' roster is the oldest in the league (average age 26.9 years), while Hoffenheim have the second youngest (23.8, Bremen 23.1).
  • With new signing Tim Wiese in goal, Hoffenheim have been unable to win a game in all competitions this season (L4 D1) and conceded 18 goals in those five games. Replacement Koen Casteels conceded only three goals in four games.
  • Adam Szalai has had a hand in seven of Mainz‘ 13 goals in all competitions this season (six goals, one assist) - a proportion of 54%.

Greuther Fürth v Werder Bremen

  • The two teams‘ only previous competitive meeting was in the QF of the German Cup 2003/04, when Fürth (then second league) lost 2-3 to Bremen, who went on to win the Championship and Cup double.
  • Fürth have lost none of their last six BL games (L4 D2). Their only win in the top flight so far was on MD2 at Mainz (1-0).
  • Fürth are yet to win a point at home, or score in front of their home crowd. They are the first BL ever to fail to score in their first four home games of the season.
  • No team has had as few big chances this BL season as Fürth (three), and they have failed to convert any of these. On the other end, Fürth have allowed their opponents the most big chances (24, like Stuttgart).
  • No team has recorded more away defeats this season in the BL than Bremen (3, like Hannover and Hoffenheim) - they have won points away from home only once, in a 2-1 win at Freiburg.
  • Ten points from eight games are Werder's lowest output in twelve years. That season (2000/01), they gained only nine points and finished the season ranked seventh.
  • Bremen have already conceded four goals in the opening 15 minutes - no other team more than two.
  • Werder are the only team in the league this season to win an away game after falling behind (2-1 at Freiburg).
  • Fürth's Edu scored his last goal in the top flight in a 1-1 of his former club Schalke at Bremen in April 2011.
  • Fürth's Gerald Asamoah scored his first BL goal for his former club Schalke in a 1-0 win at Bremen in August 1999.
  • Kevin de Bruyne has scored or assisted a goal in five of his last six BL appearances (three goals, two assists) - only against Bayern did he not manage to have a hand in a goal.

Fortuna Düsseldorf v VfL Wolfsburg

  • Düsseldorf are winless in four encounters with Wolfsburg in all competitions (L2 D2), but none of those were in the top flight.
  • Wolfsburg are bottom of the table for the first time since MD5 of 2006/07. They also never gained fewer points from the first eight games than this season (five), and have never had a goal difference as bad (-13).
  • However, whichever team had been bottom of the table after each MD this season has lost only one of their seven games on the following matchday (W3 D3) - that was Augsburg on MD5 against Leverkusen (1-3).
  • Wolfsburg have found the net only two times in their first eight games, a record low in league history (along with Bochum in 1982/83). The Wolves have failed to score in six of their eight games - Düsseldorf, meanwhile, also failed to find the net in five of their eight games.
  • Wolfsburg have been waiting for a league win for seven games now (L5 D2), and have lost four in a row without scoring for the first time ever in their BL history. They have been waiting for a goal for 408 minutes now - a club record.
  • Despite losing 0-5 to Bayern last time out, Düsseldorf have still conceded the second fewest goals in the league (eight, like Schalke - Bayern have conceded two).
  • Wolfsburg's next defeat will be their 200th in the top flight. Their overall record in 518 BL games is W192 D127 L199.
  • Düsseldorf have not won a BL home game this season (D3 L1). Only four teams have a worse points tally at home than Düsseldorf (3) this term.
  • Wolfsburg manager Felix Magath has used nine different starting XI combinations in his team's nine games in all competitions this season.
  • Magath has been waiting for a win for seven games - this has never happened to him with any club, either as a player or as a manager.
  • Star playmaker Diego was left sitting on the bench for 90 minutes against Freiburg last time out - the Brazilian had been in the starting eleven in all eight competitive games before, but hadn't scored or assisted in a BL goal.

VfB Stuttgart v Eintracht Frankfurt

  • Stuttgart have won seven of the last nine BL games versus Frankfurt (L1 D1) - their only defeat since April 2006 was a 1-2 at home on October 3 2010.
  • In the two teams' overall record against each other, Stuttgart have the upper hand (36-28 wins, with 18 draws). Frankfurt, however, has scored more goals against Stuttgart (136) than against any other team in the top flight.
  • Frankfurt are the best ever newly-promoted team in BL history. Kaiserslautern also had 19 points and a goal difference of +8 in 1997/98 (and went on to become Champions), but had scored fewer goals that season (17) than Frankfurt has this season (19).
  • Only once in their BL history did Frankfurt gain more points from their first eight games than this season. In 1993/94 they had (converted according to the three-points-rule) 20, and finished the season ranked fifth and qualifying for the following season's UEFA Cup competition.
  • Stuttgart have lost none of their last three league games (W2 D1) and have climbed in the table to 12th - their best ranking this season.
  • Stuttgart have failed to win any of their first four home games this BL season (L2 D2) - the club's worst record after four home games in the top flight.
  • Frankfurt's seven headed goals are the most in the league - Stuttgart, on the other hand, have netted only one headed goal, the fewest alongside Fürth and Augsburg.
  • Eintracht manager Armin Veh will meet the team that he celebrated his biggest success as a manager with. In 2006/07 he won the Championship with Stuttgart and led the team into the Cup finals (2-3 a.e.t. v Nürnberg).
  • Only two players have scored more goals in the Bundesliga this season than Frankfurt's Alexander Meier (5, like Leverkusen's Stefan Kießling), while only Hannover's Szabolcs Huszti has more assists than Eintracht's Bastian Oczipka (5, like Bayern's Thomas Müller).
  • Vedad Ibisevic has scored or assisted Stuttgart's last five goals (four goals, one assist) and has scored nine of the team's 18 goals in all competitions (as for before the EL game vs Copenhagen).

FC Bayern München v Bayer Leverkusen

  • Leverkusen's last win at Munich was more than 23 years ago (1-0 on October 21 1989). Since then, they have recorded five draws and 17 losses in 22 visits to Munich in the top flight.
  • However Leverkusen won the last matchup- 2-0 in March 2012 (at Leverkusen). This has been their only BL victory over Bayern within the last (almost) eight years.
  • After having won 5-0 vs Düsseldorf, Bayern are currently leading the BL table for the 600th time.
  • Bayern are the first BL team in history to ever win their first eight consecutive BL games.
  • They have won their last eleven BL games - the last BL defeat came back on April 11th at Dortmund (0-1). They have not managed to win eleven consecutive BL games since 2005 (March - September) - back then, they set the current BL record for consecutive unbeaten wins (15).
  • Bayern have not conceded a goal in the last 481 minutes of Bundesliga action.
  • Bayern have won their last nine BL games that followed a CL match, conceding only three goals in these matches.
  • Luiz Gustavo has currently appeared for 49 times in BL for Bayern. He's directly contributed to four goals in his last six BL games (three goals, one assist) - that's more than in his first 1.5 seasons for Bayern München where he altogether directly contributed three times.
  • No BL player has scored as much as Mario Mandzukic (seven goals) or Thomas Müller (six). Stefan Kießling's six goal total (like Alex Meier, Frankfurt) mean he is currently the third best goal scorer in German top flight. No other player has scored as much in 2012 as Leverkusen's striker (18 times).
  • Toni Kroos played on loan for Leverkusen between January 2009 and summer 2010, appearing in 43 BL matches for them (ten goals, ten assists). Tom Starke was also a Bayer player for several years (1999 - 2006, but not consecutively for Leverkusen), but he never appeared in BL for the club.

Hannover 96 v Borussia Mönchengladbach

  • Hannover have not been beaten in their last 22 BL home games (W13 D9). Their last BL defeat at home took place on April 30th 2011 (0-1) - against today's opponent Mönchengladbach.
  • The last team that managed to stay unbeaten in home games for such a long period was Bayern München between October 2004 and February 2006 (24 unbeaten home games).
  • Since their last promotion to BL in 2002, Hannover have lost only one of their nine BL home games vs Mönchengladbach (W6 D2). Since their 5-1 home victory against them in 2008, there has been only one bigger home win for Hannover: 6-1 in May 2010 - against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
  • Mönchengladbach have conceded at least three goals in five competitive games in 2012/12 (as for October 25th, before the game vs Marseille). Prior to this season, they have never conceded more than two goals under Lucien Favre as head coach.
  • Gaining only two points and a goal difference of 1-10 in their BL away matches, Mönchengladbach have been performing worse than any other team away from home in 2012/13. They have lost their last consecutive two away matches - 0-4 at Bremen and 0-5 at Dortmund.
  • So far in 2012/13, Mönchengladbach have only managed to win a BL game when they had lost a Europa League match during the very same week - which has been the case two times (1-3 vs Kiev, 2-4 vs Fenerbahce).
  • Didier Ya Konan and Jan Schlaudraff will meet their favourite opponent: Ya Konan has scored five goals in six matches against Mönchengladbach, Schlaudraff four times in nine matches.
  • Alvaro Dominguez was on the pitch with his former club Atletico Madrid when they won at Hannover (2-1) in the Europa League in 2011/12 (quarter-finals, 2nd leg).
  • Luuk de Jong scored nine headed goals for FC Twente in the last season (league games). In 2011/12 he has only attempted one headed shot at all.
