Europa League Opta Stats - 19 September

Tottenham Hotspur v Tromso

  • Tottenham's two previous meetings with Norwegian sides in Europe (excluding qualifiers) have both ended in victories, with the Londoners scoring six times on each occasion (6-0 and 6-3 v Lyn in 1972/73).
  • Tromso, meanwhile, have only met an English side once in Europe, when they faced Chelsea in the 1997/98 Cup Winners Cup. The Norwegian side won 3-2 at home but were beaten 1-7 at Stamford Bridge.
  • Tromso's one previous venture into the UEFA Cup/Europa League group stage saw them lose three of their four games, including both away from home, in 2005/06.
  • Indeed in seven previous away European games (excluding qualifiers), the Lads have lost six and drawn one, conceding 20 goals in the process.
  • Tottenham have only lost one of their last 13 games in the Europa League proper, winning five and drawing seven.
  • At White Hart Lane, the Lilywhites have won eight and lost just one of their last 13 in the Europa League.
  • Spurs caught their opponents offside more often than any other team in the Europa League last season (54).
  • Tromso are only in the Europa League group stages because of Besiktas's UEFA ban; the Norwegian side lost 3-2 on aggregate to the Turkish giants in the final qualifying round.
  • A Tottenham player has scored a brace in each of Spurs' last three games in Europe (Dempsey last season, Soldado and Defoe against Tbilisi in the qualifying round).
  • Tromso have lost their last three away games in this competition, failing to score in all three of these games.

Valencia v Swansea City

  • Wilfried Bony has scored three goals in three games in Europe for Swansea this term.
  • This is Swansea's first appearance in a European competition (excluding qualifiers) since October 1991, when they were eliminated by Monaco (10-1 on aggregate) in the first round of the Cup Winners Cup.
  • The Welsh side have not won a game in Europe (excluding qualifiers) since September 1982, when they beat Sliema Wanderers 12-0 at home and 5-0 away. The Swans have drawn two and lost six since then.
  • Excluding that victory in Malta, Swansea have lost all eight previous European away games, scoring just four and shipping 26.
  • Valencia's last home game in the Europa League was a 0-1 defeat to fellow Spaniards Atletico Madrid in April 2012. Before that, los Che had gone 20 games unbeaten in the competition at the Mestalla (W13 D7).
  • Miroslav Dukic's side have won seven and lost just one of their last nine home games in all competitions, with that one defeat coming against Barcelona.

Zulte-Waregem v Wigan Athletic

  • This is Zulte-Waregem's second campaign in Europe (excluding qualifiers). In 2006/07, they progressed through the group before losing to English side Newcastle United in the last 32 (1-3 at home, 0-1 away).
  • Wigan are making their first appearance in a major European competition, becoming the 34th different English side to play in one (excluding London XI).
  • The last five English teams to make their debut in Europe (excluding qualifiers, Intertoto Cup) have remained unbeaten. Fulham, Middlesbrough, Bolton and Portsmouth all won their first games, while Millwall drew theirs.
  • Only one of the last 22 meetings in Europe between Belgian and English sides has been won by the Belgians (Standard Liege 2-1 Everton in 2008), with English sides winning 16 and drawing five.
  • There have been five red cards shown in Zulte's last four home games in all competitions.
  • Chelsea loanee Thorgan Hazard has netted four goals in his last six home games.
  • In his last league game against Anderlecht, Thorgan Hazard was involved all four of Zulte Waregem's goals; scoring once and assisting the other three in a 4-3 victory.
