Premier League Opta Facts – February 9-11

 

Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United


  • Tottenham have scored the highest proportion of goals in the second half of games this season (74%).
  • Newcastle have lost each of their last three Premier League trips to White Hart Lane without scoring a single goal.
  • The Magpies have won just one of their last 11 Premier League trips to the capital (W1 D2 L8).
  • Referee Phil Dowd has awarded more penalties than any other official in the Premier League this season (8 in 16 games).
  • Tottenham have won eight and lost just one of their last 13 Premier League matches (D4).
  • Spurs have managed to net just one goal in the first half of their last 11 Premier League games.
  • Tottenham have been caught offside fewer times than any other team in the Premier League this season (38); probably through lack of minutes for Emmanuel Adebayor who was caught offside more often than any other player in 2011-12 (52).
  • The Magpies' woodwork has been struck a league-high 16 times in the Premier League this season.

Sunderland v Arsenal


  • Arsenal have conceded 62% of their goals in the first half of games - a league high proportion - and conceded fewer in total after the break than any other team (11).
  • Just three of Arsenal's 23 attempts at goal were on target as they drew 0-0 with Sunderland in the reverse fixture at the Emirates earlier this season.
  • Per Mertesacker injured his ankle ligaments on Sunderland's poor pitch in this fixture last season and the Black Cats took advantage to open the scoring in a 1-2 defeat to the Gunners.

Swansea City v Queens Park Rangers


  • Swansea have dropped just two points from winning positions in the Premier League this season, fewer than any other team.
  • The Swans have scored the lowest percentage of set piece goals this season (9%) and conceded the highest proportion (54%).
  • Swansea netted five goals from juts six shots on target when they trounced QPR at Loftus Road on the opening day.
  • QPR have drawn their last four Premier League matches, with three of those games ending 0-0.
  • Rangers have scored with just 7.8% of their shots this season, the lowest conversion rate in the top flight and meaning they need, on average, 13 shots for every goal scored.
  • Gerhard Tremmel has saved the highest percentage of opposition shots on target of any 'keeper in the top flight (81.7%).
  • The German stopper has also been forced into a save every 21 minutes on average - no goalkeeper has been more busy (level with Julio Cesar).

Southampton v Manchester City

 

  • Southampton have dropped more points from winning positions than any other team in the Premier League this season (24).
  • The Saints netted from their only two shots on target when they lost to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium earlier this season.
  • Edin Dzeko has scored five goals in his last six Premier League appearances.
  • Rickie Lambert has scored five goals in his last eight Premier League matches but all of them have come in away games.
  • The Saints have hit the target with just 40.2% of their shots this season, the lowest shooting accuracy in the top division.
  • Morgan Schneiderlin has made more interceptions (84) and more tackles (99) than any other player in the top flight this season.
  • Southampton have won none of their games against team currently in the top half of the Premier League table (W0 D5 L8).
  • Manchester City have won nine and lost none of their 10 games against teams currently in the bottom eight places in the Premier League table.
  • Manchester City have allowed their opponents fewer shots on target against them than any other team in the top flight (65).

Aston Villa v West Ham United


  • Aston Villa have recovered fewer points than any other team from matches they have been trailing this season (two).

  • Paul Lambert's side are on a run of nine Premier League games without a clean sheet; only Fulham (11 games) are on a longer current run in the PL.
  • Christian Benteke has now scored in four successive appearances for Aston Villa in all competitions (five goals).
  • Referee Mark Clattenburg has shown more red cards than any other official this season (six in 14 games).
  • Villa have won none of their last eight Premier League games (D3 L5) and overall they have picked up just 31 points in their last 40 Premier League games. The Hammers have earned 30 points in their last 25 PL matches.
  • Aston Villa have seen fewer opponents booked against them than any other team in the Premier League (20 yellows, one red).
  • Only Stoke (326) have committed more fouls in the Premier League this season than West Ham (319).
  • The Hammers have taken just one point from the last 21 available on the road and scored just five goals in their last nine games away from home in the Premier League.

Manchester United v Everton

 

  • Manchester United have recovered more points from losing positions than any other team in the top flight this season (27).
  • Manchester United have scored the most headed goals in the top flight this season (13) while Everton have conceded the most (12).
  • The Toffees have scored the highest proportion of first half goals of any team in the top division this season (58%).
  • Everton have also been susceptible to conceding early with a league-high 30% of goals conceded being shipped in the opening 15 minutes.
  • Wayne Rooney has scored eight goals in his last seven Premier League appearances and has scored or assisted 17 goals in 17 Premier League apps overall this term.
  • Manchester United have earned more points this season than they have ever done in Premier League history after 25 games (62).
  • After a run of one win in 29 games against Manchester United in the Premier League (W1 D5 L23), recent meetings have seen a more even match-up with both sides having won two and drawn two of the last six encounters.
  • The Red Devils have won 15 and lost none of the last 19 Premier League games against Everton at Old Trafford.
  • Sir Alex Ferguson's side have scored with 21% of their shots this season, the best conversion rate in the top flight.

  • Daniel Sturridge has scored in three of his four Premier League appearances for Liverpool.
  • Steven Gerrard has now equalled his highest ever assist total in a single Premier League season (9).
  • Liverpool haven't beaten any of the other teams in the top half of the Premier League this season going into this weekend (P13 W0 D7 L6).
  • After losing the first nine Premier League games against Liverpool without scoring a single goal, West Brom have won three of the last four (W3 L1).
  • Liverpool have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games where the opposition has scored (W1 D5 L4).
  • The Baggies have lost five and won none of their last six Premier League matches.
  • Luis Suarez has averaged a shot every 21 minutes, a more prolific rate than any other player in the top flight.
  • Brendan Rodgers' side have kept five clean sheets in their last six Premier League matches at Anfield including the last three in a row.
