Torres craves action for Atlético visit
FERNANDO TORRES will be desperate to face former club Atlético Madrid on Tuesday night – and few would rule out Liverpool’s Spanish hotshot scoring at any time in the Champions League clash, live on ITV1 at 7.45pm.
Torres has missed five games through injury, including Liverpool's trip to Madrid, and Spain's Euro 2008-winning goalscorer will be determined to make it up to himself for missing what was his dream Champions League match.
William Hill is offering odds of 6/5 about the boyhood Atlético fan finding the back of the net against his former heroes – and if Torres starts the game that’s a bet that looks likely to give punters a run for their money.
Those who prefer longer odds might fancy Sergio Aguero, Torres’s replacement as the Atlético fans’ poster boy, to score the first goal. Aguero returned to action at the Vicente Calderon stadium on Sunday with both his side’s goals against Real Mallorca, and odds of 8/1 about him scoring first at Anfield could be worth a shout.
Liverpool are rightly favourites to win the match, but former Liverpool target Simão and experienced Uruguayan Diego Forlan can create chances for Atlético and Aguero has the skills to scare Liverpool with a goal.
Alonso to underline his value
That said, Tuesday’s game looks ideally suited to Steven Gerrard but the 11/2 about him scoring first looks poor value and it could be a night for fellow midfielder Xabi Alonso.
The former Real Sociedad star struggled at Anfield last season but underlined his value to the Reds recently with the winner against Chelsea. He should have sealed a win against Spurs on Saturday, and seems to save his best performances for European games. 16/1 is too big a price, and he should be backed to score the first goal.
5 points Fernando Torres to score at any time (6/5)
1 point Xabi Alonso first goalscorer (16/1)
