Turkish Test Too Much for Arsenal – Betting Preview

Arsenal's defeat to Aston Villa wasn't the ideal start to the league campaign for the north London club, but it was the lack of creativity and injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that resulted in the biggest worries for the club and fans alike.

Now, they travel to Turkey for the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Fenerbahce (9/5 to win in 90 minutes). With legal wrangling hanging over their opponents, this tie may prove inconsequential in Arsenal's progression (6/4 to win in 90 minutes, 2/7 to qualify), but they will take to the pitch, and must improve from Saturday's outing if they are to get anything.

With the return of exciting left-back Nacho Monreal, the Gunners' defence is solidified, whilst the Spaniard also adds options out wide when counter-attacking. However, questions marks remain over Laurent Koscielny, whose consistency last season earned him plaudits from the media and fans. His performance against Villa on Saturday saw him concede a penalty and get sent-off, and shoulders much of the blame for their defeat.

The back line must improve against an expansive Fenerbahce, whose main threat comes through the middle with Pierre Webo (2/1 anytime, 8/1 first) and Moussa Sow (15/8 anytime, 7/1 first), but it is former Liverpool man Dirk Kuyt that could prove to be the difference at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

This could be Fenerbahce's final European clash for two years should their appeal to be banned be denied, yet they will be out to inflict another defeat on the Gunners. If Arsenal can reverse their result from the weekend, they may rely on French striker Olivier Giroud to make the difference.

He is 5/4 to score anytime, and 6/1 to grab a double, yet it may be new boy Yaya Sanogo that nets for the first time as a Gunner. He is 2/1 anytime, and well worth a punt.

Coverage of Arsenal's trip to Fenerbahce can be found live on Sky Sports 1, kicking-off at 19:45.
