Group A

France v South Africa

  • France are unbeaten against South Africa, winning twice and drawing once.
  • South Africa could become the first ever host nation to be eliminated in the first round of a World Cup.
  • A 3-0 loss against Uruguay meant that South Africa suffered the highest ever defeat for a host nation in the first round of a World Cup.
  • Carlos Alberto Parreira has failed to win any of his 10 World Cup matches with the four nations he has coached at the finals apart from Brazil: Kuwait in 1982, UAE in 1990, Saudi Arabia in 1998 and South Africa in 2010.
  • France have been eliminated in the first round in three of their four previous World Cup participations outside Europe (Uruguay 1930, Argentina 1978 and Japan & South Korea 2002).
  • France have failed to score in their last three internationals, their worst goal-drought since World Cup 2002.
  • Since Zinedine Zidane's retirement, France have failed to win their five matches at international tournaments.
  • Nicolas Anelka has scored just once in his 15 appearances at international tournaments, it was at the 2001 Confederations Cup, against South Korea.

Mexico v Uruguay

  • This will be the 18th match between these two teams, Mexico have won seven, Uruguay have won three and there have been seven draws.
  • Both teams would qualify to the knockout stage with a draw.
  • These teams have met once at a World Cup, drawing 0-0 in 1966.
  • Mexico are unbeaten in their last three encounters against Uruguay, winning 3-1 in the last two.
  • Sebastian Abreu has scored a goal in each of the last two matches between Uruguay and Mexico.
  • Javier Hernandez has netted four goals in his last five international caps.
  • If they play against Uruguay, Rafael Marquez and Cuauhtemoc Blanco will equal Antonio Carbajal's all time Mexican record of 11 World Cup appearances.
  • Diego Forlan has scored three goals in just three World Cup appearances.
  • Mexico have won just one of their nine World Cup encounters against South American opposition, losing six of these matches.
  • Uruguay have never drawn a World Cup game against a South American side, winning their first five but losing the last two.

 

Group B

Nigeria v South Korea

  • South Korea are unbeaten against Nigeria, winning twice and drawing once.
  • Nigeria have lost more World Cup matches than any other African nation (eight).
  • This will be Nigeria's first ever World Cup match against an Asian team.
  • South Korea's only World Cup match against an African side was a 2-0 win against Togo in 2006.
  • Despite having lost their opening two matches, Nigeria can still qualify if they win and Argentina beat Greece at the same time.
  • Nigeria are without a win in their last seven World Cup matches, losing six of these games.
  • There has only been one African win in eight World Cup encounters against Asian opposition, when Cameroon beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in 2002.
  • Against Greece, Nigeria became the first team at the 2010 World Cup to lose a game despite having taken the lead.

 

Greece v Argentina

  • The only previous match between these two sides was in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Argentina won 4-0 thanks to a Gabriel Batistuta hat trick and a goal by Diego Maradona, his last ever for the Albiceleste.
  • Argentina have won their last seven internationals, their best run since 1998.
  • The last time Argentina conceded more than one goal in a World Cup match was in the 1998 quarter final against the Netherlands.
  • The South-Americans are unbeaten in their last eight World Cup matches (five wins and three draws); their last defeat was against England in 2002.
  • Greece managed their first ever World Cup win last week against Nigeria, Dimitrios Salpingidis scoring their first ever goal.
  • Gonzalo Higuain became the third Argentine player to score a World Cup hat trick, after Guillermo Stabile (1930) and Gabriel Batistuta (1994 and 1998).
  • Greece's win over Nigeria was the first time they had came from behind to win a match in major tournament.
  • Argentina's opener against South Korea marked the first time the Albiceleste profited from an own goal in the World Cup.
  • The Albiceleste have won just one of their last seven meetings with European opponents at the World Cup.
  • Two of the three goals Greece have conceded in the 2010 World Cup came after free-kicks.

 


Group C

Slovenia v England

  • If England win they will secure a place in the last 16 of this World Cup, while a draw would guarantee qualification to the knock-out stage for Slovenia.
  • The only previous encounter between these two sides was a friendly game in Wembley in September 2009, England won 2-1.
  • England have drawn 0-0 in 10 World Cup matches, more than any other side.
  • England have failed to win any of their last five first round matches against a fellow European side.
  • In the 1990 World Cup England reached the semi-finals unbeaten after sharing the points in their first two group fixtures (1-1 & 0-0).
  • The Three Lions drew their final group match in both 2002 and 2006.
  • However, England have won six of their last eight ‘final' first round group matches.
  • Slovenia have lost just one of their last nine international games since losing 2-1 to England in a friendly in September 2009, winning seven of these matches.
  • After losing all three of their group games in their only previous World Cup (2006), Matjaž Kek's side are unbeaten in this campaign (a win against Algeria and a draw against the USA).
  • Wayne Rooney has failed to find the back of the net in over 10 hours of action for England.

 

USA v Algeria

  • A win in this game would secure qualification for both sides should England fail to win against Slovenia.
  • If they win it would be Algeria's first qualification to the knockout stage of a World Cup, while the USA could make it past the first round for the fourth time in their history.
  • The United States have won their last two matches against African opposition, keeping a clean sheet in the process.
  • Algeria lost both of their only two previous matches against CONCACAF opposition, failing to score in the process.
  • With his next World Cup appearance, Landon Donovan will equal the USA's all-time record of 11 appearances at the WC finals, currently held by Cobi Jones and Earnest Stewart.
  • Landon Donovan is the all-time top-scorer of the United States with 43 goals in 125 caps.
  • The 2-2 draw against Slovenia was the first time that the USA had come back from a two goal deficit at a World Cup.
  • The USA are winless in their last seven group stage games in World Cup finals (four draws, including the two of this campaign, and three defeats).
  • The USA have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 18 first round matches, since their 1-0 win over England back in 1950.
  • The United States have lost their final group match in their last six participations in the World Cup.
  • Algeria have failed to score a single goal in their last four World Cup matches.
  • Their goalless draw against England in round two ended a run of three consecutive defeats for the African side in World Cup finals.

 

Group D

Ghana v Germany

  • The only previous encounter between these two sides was won 6-1 by Germany in 1993.
  • Germany have not lost against an African side since 1982 (1-2 v Algeria in the World Cup).
  • Against Serbia, Germany lost their first World Cup group game in 24 years. In the preliminary stages of the 1986 World Cup they were beaten 2-0 by Denmark.
  • The last time Germany lost two consecutive games at the World Cup finals was between the 1978 and 1982 World Cups.
  • Ghana could become only the second African team to reach the knockout stages in two consecutive World Cups. Nigeria were the first team to achieve that feat in 1998.
  • Ghana have won their last two games against European sides at the World Cup finals, without conceding a goal.
  • Germany have won all of their last 11 games against a non-European or South American side at the World Cup finals, keeping a clean sheet in five of the last six of these.
  • Asamoah Gyan has netted 50% of Ghana's goals in the World Cup so far (three out of six).
  • The last three goals scored by Ghana in the World Cup have all come from the penalty spot.

Australia v Serbia

  • Serbia have conceded a penalty for handling the ball in both of their matches at the 2010 World Cup.
  • Serbia have kept a clean sheet in six of their last 10 internationals.
  • Australia have had four players sent off in their three World Cup participations.
  • The Socceroos are without a win in their last five games at the World Cup finals (two draws and three defeats).
  • Australia have never won in five games against European sides in the World Cup, and have lost four of these without scoring a single goal.
  • Australia have not kept a clean sheet in their last six games in the World Cup.
  • Against Germany, Serbia won their first match at the World Cup finals following a run of four consecutive defeats.

Paraguay v New Zealand

  • The only previous encounter between these two sides ended in a 3-2 win for Paraguay in1995.
  • Paraguay are unbeaten in their last five World Cup meetings against non-European sides (three wins and two draws).
  • Lucas Barrios has managed three goals and two assists in five games for Paraguay so far in his career.
  • Two of Enrique Vera's three international goals have come in Paraguay's last three matches.
  • New Zealand have drawn their last three matches at international competitions, having lost their previous 11.
  • Six of the last nine goals Paraguay have conceded at the World Cup finals have come from set-pieces.
  • New Zealand have only won three of their last 17 internationals, drawing five and losing nine.
  • 12 of Paraguay's last 13 wins have come when they have kept a clean sheet.
  • New Zealand have scored two goals from just three shots on target in the 2010 World Cup.

 

Slovakia v Italy

  • The only previous encounter between these two sides was a 3-0 win for Italy in 1998.
  • The last four goals Italy have conceded at the World Cup finals have come from set-pieces.
  • Slovakia have only managed three shots on target after their first two games.
  • Italy's last three matches at the World Cup have seen them concede first before drawing 1-1.
  • Italy have conceded two goals from the only two shots on target they have conceded at this World Cup.
  • Italy have scored 11 of their last 16 goals at World Cup finals from set-pieces.
  • Italy won both of their meetings with Czechoslovakia at the World Cup finals (2-0, 2-1).
  • The last time Italy failed to make it out of the group stage at the World Cup was in 1974.

  • Three of the four matches in Group F have finished 1-1.

Group F

Denmark v Japan

  • The only previous encounter between these two sides was a 3-2 win for Denmark in 1971.
  • Japan have scored only nine goals in 12 World Cup games.
  • The win against Cameroon marked the first time that Denmark had come from behind to win a match at the World Cup.
  • Three of the last four goals that Japan have conceded in the World Cup came from shots from outside the box in open play.
  • Japan have only won one of their six meetings with European sides at the World Cup finals.
  • If Denmark beat Japan they will reach the 2nd Round of the tournament for the fourth time in four World Cup appearances.
  • Denmark have won 10 of their 15 meetings with Asian sides, drawing three times and losing just once.
  • Japan have never won a World Cup finals game in which their opponents have scored.
  • Only in two of their 12 World Cup matches have the "Blue Samurai" scored more than one goal.
  • Denmark have never missed a penalty at the World Cup, scoring all four of their spot kicks.

 

Cameroon v Netherlands

  • The only two previous matches between these two teams produced just one goal (0-0 in 1998 and a 1-0 win for the Netherlands in 2006).
  • The Netherlands are unbeaten in their three World Cup matches against African opposition; however they have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of these meetings.
  • Cameroon were the first side to be knocked out of the 2010 World Cup.
    The "Indomitable Lions" have won just one of their last 12 World Cup games.
  • The Netherlands have only conceded two goals in their last six World Cup matches, keeping four clean sheets in the process.
  • 26 of the 32 goals Cameroon have conceded at World Cup finals have come against European opponents.
  • Holland have won all 10 of their competitive matches since the end of Euro 2008.
  • Cameroon haven't won any of their last nine meetings with European sides at the World Cup finals.
  • Cameroon have won none of their last nine internationals.

 

 

Group G

North Korea v Ivory Coast

  • The Ivory Coast have never drawn against Asian opposition, winning four matches and losing three.
  • North Korea conceded just four fouls against Portugal, only one team has conceded fewer in one game in the World Cup since 1966, West Germany (v Chile in 1974).
  • This will be the first time that either the Ivory Coast have met an Asian side or North Korea have met an African side in the World Cup.
  • North Korea have won just one of six meetings with African sides in their history, losing three and drawing two.
  • The Ivory Coast's only World Cup win came in their third group game of the 2006 World Cup when they beat Serbia 3-0.
  • North Korea have lost their last three World Cup games, conceding 14 goals in the process, although only three of those came in the first half.
  • North Korea had 17 shots off target from outside the box in their opening two matches, more than any other side in the competition.
  • The Ivory Coast made 27 unsuccessful dribbles in their first two matches at this World Cup, more than any other side in the tournament.
  • North Korea have not won any of their last eight international fixtures, losing six and drawing two.

Portugal v Brazil

  • Brazil have won 12 of their 18 encounters against Portugal, losing four and drawing twice.
  • The only World Cup encounter between these two sides was won by Portugal, 3-1 in 1966.
  • Brazil have won the last 16 matches in which they have opened the scoring.
  • Brazil have lost just one of their 32 World Cup first round matches since 1966.
  • Portugal scored as many goals against North Korea (7) as they had in their nine previous World Cup finals games.
  • Portugal had six different goalscorers against North Korea, only one game in World Cup history (Yugoslavia v Zaire in 1974) has seen more (7).
  • Brazil have now had 10 players sent off at the World Cup - a joint-high with Argentina.
  • 17 of Luis Fabiano's last 21 goals for Brazil have come as part of a brace or hat-trick.
  • Brazil's defeat to France in the 2006 Quarter-Finals ended a run of six straight wins over European sides at the World Cup.

Group H

Chile v Spain

  • Spain are unbeaten against Chile: six wins and one draw, scoring 18 goals in the process and conceding just three.
  • The last time Chile won two consecutive games in a World Cup was in 1962, the South Americans reached the semi-finals in that year.
  • Spain have won the last 38 games in which they have scored, a run stretching back to 2007.
  • Chile have scored exactly one goal in their last five World Cup finals games.
  • David Villa has scored Spain's last three World Cup goals.
  • After the second group game Alexis Sanchez had completed more dribbles than any other player in the competition (10).
  • Spain have only won four of their 12 World Cup games against South American sides.
  • Chile had conceded a tournament low one shot on target after the second group stage.
  • David Villa has scored five goals in five starts in the World Cup.
  • Chile have kept a clean sheet in their last five games.
  • After the first two group games Spain have attempted a tournament high 37 shots.

 

Switzerland v Honduras

  • In the match against Chile, Switzerland set a new record for consecutive minutes without conceding at the World Cup finals, 9 hours and 18 minutes.
  • Honduras produced a tournament low one shot on target in their first two games.
  • Switzerland have scored only five goals in their last eight World Cup finals games.
  • Honduras are without a win in their last seven internationals, failing to score in six of these matches.
  • Against Chile, Switzerland had the worst passing accuracy of any team in a World Cup game since 1966 (57%).
