Field of dreams? Winners galore in the South African Open
Plenty of betting opportunities to be had in this, the strongest field in South African Open Championship history, which has been boosted by the recent victories of three of the tournament's stars.
Tim Clark, Henrik Stenson and Richard Sterne all head into the tournament at Pearl Valley Golf Estates - the fourth in The Race to Dubai - as the most in-form golfers in the field of European Tour and Sunshine Tour campaigners.
Tim Clark, 12/1 in the outright betting became just the third South African to mark up a victory in the Australian Open earlier in the month, and could emulate Gary Player and Bobby Locke who have previously won both events in the same year.
Henrik Stenson is still celebrating his impressive nine-stroke victory in the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City, and is favourite at 7/1 to become only the second Swede to ever win the South African Open after Mathias Gronberg managed victory in 2000.
16/1 Richard Sterne heads to Pearl Valley Golf Estates having just triumphed in the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek to claim his fourth European Tour title and his second this year alone.
The young South African also wrapped up the Sunshine Tour's Order of Merit race with this past weekend's victory. Each-way backers take note. E/W odds are ¼ for a first five finish.
A couple of South African facts?
- Only the Currie Cup rugby trophy of 1893 is older than The South African Open as a competitive sporting event.
- The lowest 18 hole score ever shot at this event was by John Bland who in 1993 shot a 62.
