Widd you believe it?
Ann Widdecombe has been backed to be the next permanent Speaker of the House of Commons.
A number of big bets have been placed on the Conservative MP for Maidstone and The Weald including a £300 stake by a William Hill client from Cornwall.
The bets have seen the former Minister for Prisons and Shadow Home Secretary's odds slashed from 10/1 to 7/1. She is now fourth favourite behind fellow Tory John Bercow who at 3/1 leads the betting.
Joint second favourites at 5/1 are one-time favourite Sir George Young and Birkenhead Labour MP Frank Field.
Widdecombe has previously stated that she will be standing down at the next General Election so quite why she would put herself forward for nomination as Speaker and the House elect her are a mystery.
But it appears that the public believe she will be the one chosen by her fellow Members on 22nd June and with the expenses scandal showing no signs of calming down the outspoken MP could be the perfect tonic to shake things up in Parliament.
