Time Gentleman, please

Joe "The Gentleman" Perry beat UK and World Champion Ronnie O'Sullivan to progress to the quarter-finals of the 2008 UK Championship.

Perry took all six frames in the second session to seal a remarkable comeback and victory over the world's number one player. Odds on Perry to win the match got as big as 10/1 when he was 5-2 down on Tuesday night but he came back strongly the following day, and took advantage of some of Ronnie's trademark petulance, to record a fantastic 9-5 win.

This could be Joe Perry's time to shine. He is now 5/1 to win the UK Championship, looks to be in the easier half of the draw and is showing some form.

Ronnie O'Sullivan had this to say about Perry after his defeat: "He played great - I wasn't going to win today.

"His safety was great, he scored when he got in and didn't miss much. I didn't have any tip issues, I just got outplayed on the day. Sometimes you've just got to hold your hands up."

This David Gray didn't beat Perry in 2004

Perry reached the semi-finals of the UK Championship twice but has never made it all the way to the final. In 2005 he was beaten by a red-hot Ding Junhui who went on to win the tournament. Against David Gray in 2004 he was practically in the final having his opponent needing snookers in the penultimate frame but somehow failed to progress.

Hoping to stop his progress this year is Marco Fu who faces a tough challenge. The confidence that Perry will be playing with after beating Ronnie will require a perfect game from Fu to make it a match. Joe Perry is now 4/6 and shortening.

Get on now - it's time.
