Favourites For Papacy Need To Be Wary Of Italian Job
Canadian, Marc Ouellet, and Ghanaian, Peter Turkson are 7/2 joint favourites to be named as the next Pope, but they will have to be wary of an Italian job according to William Hill, who offer 7/4 that the next Pope comes from Italy.
Current 5/1 third favourite, Angelo Scola and 9/1 joint sixth favourites Gianfranco Ravasi and Tarciso Bertone all come from Italy and we could well see an Italian Pope given that nearly 18% of the Papal Conclave hail from there.
"We have a situation whereby we have a Canadian and a Ghanaian as our joint favourites to become Pope but the sheer number of runners from Italy, suggests that we could see both of those usurped by an Italian," said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. "Of course we have not had an Italian Pope since the 1970s as well."
