Shock As 25/1 Jorge Mario Bergoglio Wins Pope Idol
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was announced as the new Pope on Wednesday evening as William Hill bookmakers saw one of their most global current affairs market ever. Upwards of 6,000 bets from over 50 different countries were taken on the “next Pope” market with just a small percentage of those placed on the Argentinean Cardinal.
Bergoglio had seen a lot of early activity, however in recent days, his odds drifted from 10/1 to 25/1.
“This is a market that has really grabbed the attention of punters around the globe and we saw five different favourites in the short time since Pope Benedict XVI stepped down,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. “To say that this result is a shock, however, is an understatement.”
