2010 World Cup: The Top Scorer

The group stages have come and gone, the second round formalities are over and we're down to the business end of the 2010 World Cup.

Ahead of the quarter final matches there are three players currently leading the goalscoring charts on four goals. Gonzalo Higuain of Argentina, David Villa of Spain and Slovakia's Robert Vittek have all hit the back of the net on four occasions but only Higuain and Villa will have the opportunity to improve on their records as unfortunately for Vittek, the Slovaks were eliminated by Holland in the second round.

Villa's goals have rescued Spain's World Cup after a opening defeat against the Swiss. They now look like a team that can go on to win the World Cup, mainly due to the inspirational form of the newly signed Barcelona striker.

One goal behind the current leaders are a host of World Cup hotshots that could well overtake the likes of Higuain and Villa if their team can progress through to the final.

Luis Fabiano of Brazil, Asamoah Gyan of Ghana, Thomas Muller of Germany and Uruguay's Luis Suarez have all notched three times in South Africa and shouldn't be overlooked in the quest to become the top scorer in 2010.

Fabiano scored a double against the Ivory Coast (one with a dubious double assist off his arm) and the opener second goal of the game against Chile. The Sevilla front man certainly benefits from the creativity of the Brazilian midfield, orchestrated by Kaka, and could fire in more goals with the service he receives.

Uruguay's strike force of Suarez and Diego Forlan will come up against the Ghanaian defence in the quarter finals and will be well backed to score the goals to put them through. Suarez hit a brace in Uruguay's victory over South Korea and after finding his scoring boots could go on to hit more against the Africans.

Here are a selection of the players vying to be the 2010 World Cup top scorer:
