The Grand National is one of the most famous races in the world and one that the nation stops to watch. But, with 34 runners – the new, reduced field size – set to take their chance, how do you narrow down the Grand National field?
Some people will choose their runners based on name, silks colour, lucky number, sweepstake or using a random generator.
Here are some key trends that can help you whittle down the runners. Maybe these handy stats could just help you pick a Grand National winner?

Grand National Key Trends
Age
- Only one seven-year-old has won the race since 1950. Horses aged between 8 and 11 have the best record.
- Eight-year-olds have won four of the last 10 renewals
Weight
- Eight of the last 10 winners carried less than 11 stone
- Only 29% of winners since 1950 have carried 11 stone or more
Price
- Favourites don’t have a particularly good record in the race; only five have won since 2000.
- Don’t be put off by a big price. Five of the last 10 winners have been sent off 25/1 or bigger. That number increases to eight if you go back to 2000.
- There can be huge shocks too. Mon Mome returned to the winners’ enclosure as a 100/1 winner in 2009, while in 2013 Auroras Encore was successful at 66/1. 2022’s winner, Noble Yeats, was a 50/1 shot.
