Rod's Odds: Premier League Darts Preview Week 1

This Thursday the Echo Arena in Liverpool will stage the opening night of the ninth year of the PDC's Premier League. With the field increased to ten players there are plenty of markets to whet the appetite.

Each week I will be give you a rundown of every game also giving you the inside info on what is happening behind the scenes on the PDC Tour.

Also keep a look out for my major punt. Over the sixteen weeks, I will try to sort out a nice double or treble each night.

Game 1

Dave Chisnall v  Robert Thornton

Newcomer Chisnall is not coming into his first night on the best of form. Since his defeat in the World Grand Prix last year to Phil Taylor he has been playing very indifferent and he plays a player in Thornton that knows what the new Premier League crowds are like.

Going on the form book you would have to go with Thornton. We know that Chisnall can turn it on at anytime, however it would be a massive turnaround if he did so this week.

Thornton win.

Game 2.

Peter Wright v Wes Newton.

Peter Wright is another newcomer to the league and his runner up spot to Van Gerwen in the World Championship at Christmas has put him as favourite although, last week in Germany, his performance was the worst he has played over the last two years after changing darts again.

I had words with Pete and he assures me he is going back to the darts that he played with in the Worlds and that for me keeps him as the favourite.

Wes Newton is learning how to grind results out, however I just feel that Wright could be to consistent leg on leg for Wes to beat him.

Wright win.

Newton most 180s 4/7

Game 3.

Raymond Van Barneveld v Gary Anderson.

Anderson is fresh from winning the event in Germany. He had his prolific scoring power back so he will feel confident of a good performance. That said, Barney is very hard to back against at any time so, for me, this game is one to stay away from in all markets just sit back and watch one of the best games of the opening night.

9 dart finish may be worth a little flutter 25/1 and Barney to have the highest check out at 5/6

Game 4.

Phil Taylor v Michael Van Gerwen.

This game is going to be a cracker, the reigning World Champion against the 16 times Champion and Mighty Mike is out to prove that he is worthy of his new ranking as Number 1. Taylor has had a long break since Christmas so no-one knows how his form will be but the Taylor of old will make sure he is ready for this one and has something to prove to all the doubters.

This game is another one where I would not chance any money, however Van Gerwen at 4/7 for the most 180s looks bang on especially doubled up with something else.

Van Gerwen most 180s 4/7

What about a punt on the 9 dart leg in this match? 18/1

Game 5

Simon Whitlock v Adrian Lewis.

Another high scoring game is expected with plenty of maximums. Both these players are very evenly matched and the draw could be the bet if you want a punt on the outcome.

Bet for me is over 120.5 check out 5/6

My big punt for week one has got to be Van Gerwen most 180s over Taylor 4/7 and Newton most 180s over Peter Wright 8/13. The double pays more than 6/4.
