Champions League Last 16 1st Leg Opta Facts

Arsenal - Barcelona

o   Arsenal, who finished second in Group F behind Bayern Munich, are the only team alongside Real Madrid to have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League every season since the new format in 2003/04. They have however been knocked out in the last 16 in each of the last five seasons.

o   Barcelona, who finished top of Group E ahead of Roma, have made it to the knockout stages of the Champions League for the 12th consecutive campaign. They have reached the semi-finals in seven of the last eight campaigns. The only exception was in 2013/14 season, when they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Atletico Madrid.

o   Barcelona have won the Champions League in four of the last 10 seasons. No other team has won it more than once in the same period. They could become the first team since AC Milan to win back-to-back European Cup/Champions League titles. The Rossoneri did it in 1989 & 1990.

o   Barcelona have come out on top in each of their three previous Champions League home & away knockout encounters with Arsenal: 2006 final (2-1), 2009/10 quarter-final (6-3 on agg.) and 2010/11 Last 16 (4-3 on agg.).

o   Arsenal and Barcelona's seven previous Champions League encounters have produced 27 goals, an average of 3.86 per game.

o   Arsenal have lost their Last 16 home tie in each of the previous three seasons, every time by a two goal margin (v Bayern Munich in 2012/13 and 2013/14, v Monaco in 2014/15).

o   Arsenal have scored in their last 13 Champions League games, their best run since their 21 games in a row from October 2003 to November 2005.

o   Barcelona have won 15 of their 19 Champions League games since last season (D2 L2). They've also never failed to score in those 19 games.

o   Barcelona are one of two clubs still unbeaten in the Champions League this season, the other being Real Madrid.

o   Alexis Sanchez has been directly involved in 58.3% of Arsenal's Champions League goals this season, scoring three times and delivering four assists.

o   Neymar has scored seven goals in his last five Champions League knockout games.

o   Lionel Messi has scored six goals in four Champions League games against Arsenal. However, he has yet to score at the Emirates with Barcelona.

 

Juventus- Bayern Munich

o   Juventus, who finished second in Group D behind Manchester City, have made it to the knockout stages of the Champions League in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2005/06.

o   Bayern Munich, who finished top in Group F ahead of Arsenal, have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League for the 8th consecutive campaign. They've made it to the semi-finals in five of the last six seasons.

o   Juventus and Bayern Munich's only previous encounter in the knockout stages of the Champions League saw the Bavarian side progress 4-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of the 2012/13 edition.

o   Bayern Munich have won their last two away games against Juventus in the Champions League (6 goals scored, 1 conceded).

o   Juventus are winless in their last four Champions League games against Bayern Munich (D1 L3), their last victory dating back to November 2005 courtesy of a David Trezeguet brace (2-1).

o   Juventus are the only team, alongside Paris SG and Real Madrid, yet to concede a goal at home in the Champions League this season.

o   Juventus scored only six goals in this season's group stages, the lowest total among the 16 teams that made it to the knockout campaign.

o   Juventus have lost only two of their last 34 home games in the Champions League (W22 D10). Both of those defeats were against Bayern Munich.

o   Bayern Munich are winless in their last five away games in the Champions League knockout stages (D2 L3).

o   Bayern Munich were the top scorers in this season's group stages alongside Real Madrid, netting 19 goals.

o   Alvaro Morata has scored six goals in eight starts in the Champions League knockout phase.

o   Robert Lewandowski has scored 30 Champions League goals since his debut in 2011/12. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (60) and Lionel Messi (43) have been more prolific over the same period.

o   Philipp Lahm's next Champions League game will be his 100th in the competition. He'll become only the second German player to reach that mark after Oliver Kahn (103).

 

Dynamo Kiev - Manchester City

o   Dynamo Kiev hadn't reached the knockout stages of the Champions League since 1998/99. They were then eliminated by Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.

o   Dynamo Kiev finished second in Group G behind Chelsea to reach the knockout stages.

o   Manchester City, who finished top in Group D ahead of Juventus, have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League for the third consecutive season. They have never made it past the Last 16 though, being knocked out by Barcelona in each of the last two campaigns.

o   Dynamo Kiev and Manchester City's only previous encounter was in the Last 16 of the 2010/11 Europa League. The Ukrainian side won 2-1 on aggregate.

o   English teams have won none of their last five away games against Ukrainian opposition in the Champions League (D3 L2). Their last success dates back to October 2007 when Manchester Utd won 4-2 against Dynamo Kiev.

o   Manchester City were the only side - among the 16 who reached the knockout stages - that failed to register a clean sheet in the group stages.

o   None of Manchester City's 34 Champions League games has ended goalless. They have only kept four clean sheets in these 34 games. Only Basel have played more games in the competition without ever registering a goalless draw (46).

o   Dynamo Kiev have won only one of their last five Champions League home games (D3 L1), that was against Maccabi Tel Aviv in their last outing (1-0).

o   Dynamo Kiev conceded more fouls than any other side in this season's Champions League group stages (106 in six games).

o   Manchester City scored more goals than any other team in the final 15 minutes of games during the group stages (5).

o   Manchester City fielded the oldest squad in this season's group stages with an average age of 29 years old (as of the final matchday).

o   Sergio Agüero has scored 15 goals in his last 16 Champions League starts.

o   Raheem Sterling didn't score a single goal in his six Champions League games with Liverpool last season. This season with City, he has netted three goals in six games.

 

PSV Eindhoven - Atletico Madrid

o   PSV Eindhoven hadn't reached the knockout stages of the Champions League since 2006/07. They were then eliminated by Liverpool in the quarter-finals.

o   PSV Eindhoven finished second in Group B behind Wolfsburg to reach the knockout stages.

o   Atletico Madrid have made it to the knockout stages of the Champions League for the third consecutive season, a first in their history.

o   Atletico Madrid finished top in Group C ahead of Benfica to reach the knockout stages.

o   This is the second time PSV and Atletico Madrid are meeting in European competition after the 2008/09 Champions League group stages. The Colchoneros won both games (3-0 in Eindhoven, 2-1 in Madrid).

o   PSV have won only one of their eight Champions League against Spanish opposition (D3 L4), that was against Deportivo La Coruña in December 2003.

o   PSV have also never kept a clean sheet in their eight Champions League games against Spanish clubs.

o   PSV have won all three of their Champions League home games this season, scoring exactly two goals each time.

o   PSV have never scored more than two goals in their last 36 Champions League games. The last time they did was in the 2005 semi-final second leg against AC Milan (3-1).

o   PSV fielded the youngest squad in this season's group stages with an average age of 24 years and one month (as of the final matchday).

o   Atletico Madrid have kept 11 clean sheets in their last 15 Champions League games.

o   However, Diego Simeone's men have failed to find the net in four of their last six Champions League away games.
